You may not know that wool area rugs have been around since the 5th century.  This should give you some idea as to not only their longevity and durability, but popularity as well.  They are still produced in ways that would look very similar to those practices many centuries ago.  Persian rugs and craftsmen in the Middle-East are still the most well-known areas of the world where these are produced.
